I found this book to be very informative and readable. Very well written and captivated my total attention. Highly recommended to anyone who has experienced cancer personally or with someone significant y=in their life.

How does it feel to face the unknown, to enter a world of hope, loss, and dread?" lead me to believe that this book was more about individual stories of cancer patients one doctor has encountered over his career and its emotional toll on patient, doctor, and family. However, this book is not about that at all.It is true that Dr. Scadden knew of three people who died of cancer when he was a child living in Wykcoff, New Jersey. One was a friend's mother, then a lady neighbor, and the third was a classmate in second grade. His mother and father also died of cancer when he was an adult. Other than this and a few mentions of people who have been cured of cancer or died as a result of this or that trial, he really discusses how cancer research has evolved over the years.This is a book more about the science of cancer than anything else and how various researchers or doctors made scientific discoveries as it concerns cancer or stem cells. Unfortunately, this was not the type of book I was expecting or would have selected to read had I known what was inside. Nevertheless, it is written in an engaging manner and is easy for a lay person to understand. Although I am unable to maintain any knowledge of the science, doctors, and researchers involved in this or that discovery, I did learn several things from this text.- First, cancer is extremely complex and the treatment is just as complicated.- Second, not everyone responds to the same therapy. Some people have cancers with a genetic profile that makes them more susceptible to a specific drug regimen or cure.- Some therapies that seem promising in the beginning can turn out to not be such a breakthrough in the end.- In some cases, finding the cells that can fight cancer and regenerating them outside the body and then injecting them back into the body, can cure cancer for particular patients. This is the gist of what I understood.- The research done on mice does not necessarily translate to humans. Human stem cells may be the answer to solve this dilemma (and perhaps save a few mice from suffering in the future--my hope, not the author's).- Stem cells hold tremendous promise in the cure for cancer and other medical disciplines such as generating certain organs. Dr. Harald Ott invented a method of working with cells that allowed other researchers to develop human heart muscle cells in a lab that beat like a human heart. Of course, this technique is in its infancy, but the potential is profound.- Despite how detached a doctor may seem when they loose a patient, all (or at least most) are saddened by the loss.It comes through loud and clear in this book that Dr. Scadden is an M.D. (no longer practicing) that is now passionate about doing scientific work with blood stem cells to try to find some cure for cancer or at least to explore its potential in reducing human suffering. I believe it consumes him.Even though I expected something different from this book than what was delivered, I still enjoyed getting a better understanding of what goes on behind the scenes in research. I do feel, however, "Cancerland" will be of more interest to medical researchers, scientists, and those enthusiastic about the historical evolution in search of a cancer cure and not as much interest to a lay person like me.

In healthy animals, different kinds of differentiated cells regard each other respectfully, working together and behaving themselves. Through chemical agreement, growth is limited, energy is shared, and various duties are parceled out to be accomplished on the organism’s behalf. Scadden, who is a distinguished professor of medicine at Harvard and co-founder of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, comes across as the kind of scientist and doctor you always hoped to find in hard times. He’s also done something that may not immediately be apparent but is important when chronicling a story as complicated and uncertain as cancer research. The result is a book that read smoothly through discussion of even the most complex and ambiguous of research and treatment matters.The base problem is that cancer isn’t one ailment.
