Review
“Richard Williams has long been widely regarded as an enigma. Now, in his own words he reveals himself as a proud—and sometimes dangerously stubborn—warrior with a keen, incisive mind. Part memoir and part how-to guide on raising children, this is a fascinating tale of a complex character who refused to give up or give in to the status quo.” – Nathan McCall, author of Makes Me Wanna Holler“Inspiring and tough-minded, Williams’ book is above all a celebration of one man’s resilient, unorthodox spirit. Upfront and unapologetic.”—Kirkus“Fascinating, revealing, and in-depth memoir.”—Black Tennis Review“Packed with riveting anecdotes, little-known facts and a triumphant, inspiring undertone, the book delivers unique insight into the mind and method of a determined, victorious man.”—Ebony magazine“Gritty, opinionated, and inspirational, Williams' memoir is a testament to a man's courage, drive, and commitment.”—Publishers Weekly“An iconoclast’s remarkable account of triumphing over hatred.” (Chicago Tribune)

I enjoyed this book for reasons different than what I initially expected. Mr. Richard William's book is exceptional in the sense that it's an autobiographical look at his life, at times it's overwhelming to deal with characters coming in and out with little dimension. I expected to hear more about his wife, and a more in-depth view of the Williams sisters ascension to the personal relationships. What was unexpected that I did enjoy was his upbringing in the south and how it shaped him in the good and bad. It's a good book to read if you're into civil rights - which I wasn't expecting at all. The first half of the book really pulls you in, into his life and into his sadness. It's difficult to read this book without crying to be honest. The second half starts lagging a little, the pace and the voice seems to change at times. And then there's the bombastic nature of Mr. William's describing his struggles with the local gangs in south central. It's a good book, but less about tennis and more about Mr. Williams. The Williams sisters have a very strong father who wouldn't take no for an answer, ever.
This is a must read! I enjoyed this book tremendously. There are times when you are reading and feeling pure amazement at what this man has experienced in his lifetime. Pure wonder and astonishment at what he has overcome and accomplished. The read was very exciting full of adventure, intrigue, love and compassion. He takes you on a journey through the deep South with all its challenges, to up North and his new life experiences, to finally the West with its opportunities and conquest. It is modern day Black Literature. If you like authors like Richard Wright or Reginald Lewis you will love Richard Williams because, he fits in that category. He makes history come alive with his colorful style of storytelling. You feel his emotions of sadness, joy, disappointment, hatred, joy, excitement and passion. It's a thriller, love story and horror movie all wrapped up in one book! Wow, thank you Richard for being so open and candid about your life! I found this book to be very inspiring, encouraging and hopeful of one day accomplishing my fight in obtaining the American Dream!!!
I THOROUGHLY enjoyed reading this book!!! Mr. Williams delivered an extremely candid account of how he planned and succeeded in raising two "tennis greats" (my words). The book gave an honest, historical background for Mr. Williams, as well as, Venus and Serena. This book is VERY easy to read because it draws you in and makes you feel welcome (like an invited guest with a "welcome mat" extended to you)!!! I have followed Venus and Serena's careers since they were little girls with braids and beads; however, THIS book gave me AMAZING insight and for that, I am forever grateful to their doting father, Richard Williams!!! I would recommend this book to anyone aspiring greatness because Mr. Williams shares numerous gems for success, which you WILL ONLY FIND BETWEEN THE COVERS OF THIS BOOK!!! Trust me on that one!!!
This story puts you in his shoes from childhood with exposure to hate and violence inflicted on him and friends. His trying path to overcome this, fraught with difficulty and the joy of raising a family is a tale of tenacity well worth feeling as you are reading. It is difficult to feel the reality of what he has overcome but the courage to share his grit is striking. Not an easy read but,I think well worth the pain to earn the feel of his pride. Cactus
This book definitely changed the way I had erroneously thought about Richard Williams and his unconventional plan to raise tennis champions. In reading his book, I discovered my own values so clearly articulated and so courageously and unapologetically lived by an extraordinary man.I found myself humbled by his strength and selfless desire to change a pervasive racist culture, and in awe of his expressions of vulnerability at the thought of not being able to shield his daughters from the bigotry and injustice they would surely experience.I couldn't put this book down! Every chapter left me wanting to read more, and it did not disappoint. I was most impressed by his gracious love and devotion to the mother of his children, his own mother, his daughters, and women in general. I've always heard Venus and Serena speak so endearingly about their father, and now it's so very easy to see why.T. N. Hayes, Ph.D.
The book was great up until about 80 percent. His upbringing was riveting. It's hard to believe what he wrote. Whether it is true or not, it was still very well written and kept me turning the pages fast as ever.At the 80 percent mark he starts talking about how he raised his kids. You get the point that how he raised his kiand I think he is a great dad but I stopped reading because he cited over and over examples of how he raised his kids and it just kept going on . It was over the top.I truly believe it should be read by new parents. They can learn a trenmendous amount from him.My kids are older so this was a little too much for meAll said and done I'm glad I read the 80 percent and want my kids to read it for when they have children they will definitely learn something.
This is by far the best autobiography I've ever read. I literally couldn't put the book down. Mr. Williams epitomizes what so many give lip service to but yet have been unable to achieve for themselves: "Pulling oneself up by his own bootstrap". It's amazing how little credit this genius of a man is given. For what he has overcome to reach the successes he has achieved, for the excellent role model he is for his children and all others who seek to overcome great obstacles, and for the wonderful parent he has been I say Mr Williams is a true American hero!,
