About the Author

James B. Torrance (1923-2003) was professor emeritus of systematic theology at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. He also served as a parish minister at Invergowrie (Dundee, Scotland) and as a lecturer at New College, University of Edinburgh. His books include A Passion for Christ (PLC Publications, 1999), cowritten with his brothers, Thomas F. Torrance and David V. Torrance.

If you want to understand what is worship, you must read this insightful book. I have read many other books about worship and they leave it out to you "doing your thing" to God. In this book, Torrance points out, it is not possible to have “a true understanding of worship, prayer, baptism and the Lord’s Supper without a New Testament understanding of the priesthood of Christ.” I suggest that the priesthood of Christ is the key point of Torrance on his theology of worship. When writing about worship, many Christian authors have missed the reality of our sinful nature and the fact that it is impossible for humanity to offer an acceptable worship without Christ’s constant priesthood. The only thing we have to offer is the sin that makes Christ’s continual intercession necessary. But we are so proud, that only God’s intervention can open our eyes to the fact that we are sinners in need of a Substitute and a Mediator, Jesus our Savior. This is what really fuels worship to God, knowing that we are sinful, He is Holy, and He justified us and sanctified us in Christ, so that we have free access to the Throne of God worshiping the Father through the intercession of the Spirit, in the priesthood of Christ. This kind of Trinitarian theology of worship is what Torrance explains in his book. In conclusion, Torrance's message is that any definition of worship as “what we do before God”, theologically implies that the only priesthood is our priesthood. What we do before God does not define our worship. Christian worship is defined by what Christ has done and continue doing before the Throne of God as our Mediator.

I recently purchased this book for a Sacramental Theology class at my seminary and I must say that it is by far my favorite book that I have read so far while at my school. It is a short read, but it concisely and skillfully surveys sacramental theology. I recommend this for all as a book to purchase and keep, especially if you are a minister (or minister-in-training).

J.B. Torrance gives a stunning look into the life of the Trinity, and our participation in that very life through worship and fellowship with Father, Son and Spirit. I often found myself putting this book down in contemplation and worship: astonished with what Christ had accomplished for the human race. This book opens your eyes to what makes the good news so astounding and wonderful: we, through Christ, partake of the very Triune life of God!

Fantastic book, I highly recommend it to anyone who loves theology or cares about the worship of the church.

This is a deeply profound book that examines worship from a place that is deeply personal and relational. I bought itto read for school but will read it again for me so I can understand Gods movement in worship. it was read as an academic but easily accessible to the lay person as well.

Excellent book and excellent seller.

This book unpacks it in a thesis like feel. I would certainly recommend any and all that are excited about the relationship between the church body and the trinity. Read it, it's worth your while!
