Intriguing mix of the standard: portal, litRPG, and Faustian deals mixed into one whole.Edward is a gamer who gets into trouble on Earth and is offered a job as a dungeon lord on another world in the service of Murmur the dark god of said world. Edward accepts mostly because it offers him the opportunity to make his own fate and to proof that not all bosses are going to jerks. Of course, being thrown in a more or less unknown world right in the thick of things do not make things easy, but he manages to find allies, and not just survive but at least for now thrive. It does not come easy though and there is no save game or respawn in this 'game'. There is also a bit of a mystery on what is going on, which makes me very curious about future parts, but it is not a true cliffhanger end.The game elements are relatively simple, you earn xp and spend it to buy talents and powers. Skills you learn by using them. Stats can be raised but only though actions and hard training. There is a bit of strategy to the character building, but not much, since you only see your options immediately available not the steps beyond. Descriptions are a bit vague as well. Then again, since it is not actually a game, that is not too bad. It just might not be what some fans of the genre expect. Intriguing, rather dark world, appears black-and-white and first, but becomes more gray the further in you go. I like it, especially since there is no pyric victory nor is the hero (and he is a hero, not an anti-hero, except for the deal there is nothing dark to his actions yet) agonizing over his decisions. The story is told mostly from the point of view of Edward with the occasional temporary switch to others, but only for a few paragraphs. I have never been a big fan of switching, and while the number is not that high that it becomes irritating to me, it does not add much to the story in my opinion either (the exception is the switch to the girl, that helps setting the mood). All in all, a solid addition to my litRPG library and looking forward to the next part.

Transported to a game world LitRPG with a light mix of dungeon master in it.Even though it’s implied that this is a dungeon master story that aspect of the story is rarely used. So don’t expect a story like the Divine Dungeon series or The Slime Dungeon Chronicles. Instead being a dungeon lord, (or really just being able to make tunnels, summon a 1hp minion and make pacts with creatures) is used as a kind of super power for the character. He uses those powers to adventure in a fantasy world that seems opposed to him. There are some interesting faustian themes of power corrupting and good people furthering evils cause. There’s also some rather graphic horror scenes, especially at the 70-73% mark.Overall, a good action story. The mix of dungeon building powers with adventuring is interesting too.Score: 7 out of 10.

Who would like this book:- Fans of Aleron Kong's The Land- Fans of the Way of the ShamanOne part action adventure, one part dungeon building, one part leveling up. This book has it all in the right proportions to make a wonderful read. There are many books in the LitRPG genre that I can't finish or I don't care enough about to read the next books in the series. Dungeon Lord is an exception. The main character examines his choices with care and the reader sees some of the thought processes behind his actions. He acts like a real person who responds to very real danger. What I found most compelling about the story is the exploratory way the main character approaches situations combined with quick thinking to make the most out of potentially deadly encounters. There is no lazy deus ex machina here. What this book isn't:- a harem book with well-endowed women throwing themselves at the hero (although there is PG-13 sex)- a detailed dungeon building adventure- a light romp through magical sunshine and rainbow world (it gets pretty dark in the last quarter of the book, but not like Game of Thrones or American Horror Story)- an anti-hero performing evil deeds without consequences - the main character is trying to make the best of a difficult set of circumstancesWhat this book is:- a believable world with believable characters- a fun story- a multi-layered society with gradations of understanding of concepts of good and evil- an action packed story with great pacing- a well edited book (unlike SO MANY other LitRPG titles)If you are considering buying it, do yourself and favor and buy it!Can't wait for the next one!

Started off a bit slow, but really ramped up 25% of the way in. Unorthodox Dungeon Lord tactics brings back appeal as to why Castles and Outposts were first used in Medieval times and the manner of army building was quite interesting to see who or what would be added next to the main characters forces.Pros:Tons of potential, great world for expansion, main character isn't a limp-wristed NEET turned God-Complex. Support characters have a great foundation for backstory, growth, and depth.Cons:Slow start, doesn't start rolling till 25% in, main characters abilities could use some work or have more development into what makes him more of a "Dungeon Lord".

Definitely a gray morality kind of book. Most of the choices that Edward makes are objectively good, but everyone hates him, and sometimes the choices are more... worst of two evils kind of thing. The dungeon aspects are somewhat limited (kinda reminds me of Warcraft, C&C, etc) but do tie in to the story strongly. Was surprised at how well done the mindbrood thing was done, really provides a strong emotional impact.Definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.
