This is an original, imaginative, and well-researched tale that takes the reader on an undersea adventure that spins wildly out of control. It brought to mind Sphere, Andromeda Strain, and other sci-fi I’ve read and seen on film. It is filled with suspense, a mystery, and action. It should appeal especially to science fiction fans.It is told in first person, present tense by Dexter Knight, member of a group of rogue undersea adventurers with skills in exploration, engineering, artificial intelligence, autonomous undersea drones, minisubs, and other technical and arcane arts. Their motivation appears to be getting rich, but for all the risks they take and trouble they get into, they must also love the work and be in it for the fun and adventure. (Just like pirates.)The plot: After surreptitiously recovering valuable artifacts from famous undersea wreck, the team and their toys (technologies) are shanghaied by a mysterious organization with guns and muscle to make another recovery but from a seemingly impossible depth. They commence a search, monitoring their site from the surface, encounter a strange, shiny object roaming the ocean and spreading havoc, and seek to understand it. Much action follows, involving deep submarine dives, helicopters, dolphins, torpedoes, flashing red lights and alarms, shape charges, free diving, a mutiny, and more. Sound exciting?It is.
Best Kindle book I've read in quite awhile. Well developed characters, interesting plot, fast-moving pace. Kept me up way too late at night. Had to force myself to stop reading. The writer is exceptional and has a great ability to inject both humor and cultural references. Just don't expect all your questions to be answered. My only major criticism was that the book needed a careful edit to clean up grammatical mistakes before it was printed. There were too many and they were distracting.
Free Drive takes you to an epic adventure underwater uncovering mysteries instead of diving on titanic wreck and search for priceless relic. This is an awesome story that circles around Dexter and two of his friends who are too smart to get into the bottom of the sea and retrieve fine china without diving in. But when a new recruit betrayed them and sold them to this selfish organization, Dexter and his team found themselves miles and miles beneath the Marianas Trench. Great story, I don't want to be the spoiler of the event, find out what happened to Dexter and his team. This book is absolutely entertaining!
"Free Dive" is an interesting book. For starters, it's a delightful mishmash of themes. Our protagonist, Dexter Knight, and his comrades are a fun group to follow through the story as the plot twists and turns. And does it ever twist. From one moment to the next he's elbowed into working for an organization with mysterious interests. While Dexter doesn't know what the organization has in mind to do, he's pretty certain they don't have Dexter's interests in mind at all. Naturally, he resists the compulsion to cooperate, but there's something about the task they've put him too that's... odd... I won't spoil it for you. This is something you need to experience yourself. There was a fair amount of humor, which I did also appreciate.All in all, it was a good read.
I found this book to be fast-paced and also easy to follow and understand. I read mostly mysteries and suspense, and this book had loads of both. Dexter and his partners decide to dive for more than mere china. They want to make some serious money. A secret organization hijacks them on a mission to the bottom of the sea. They are in over their heads. Through many twists and turns and mounting danger, they uncover a mysterious object that tops all others. One of their employees had double crossed them. Will Dexter and friends follow the right path or the path to greed? So many possibilities. So much ocean. Read and find out.
But horrendous editing. Great story, but completely unbelievable dialog. And really horrendous editing. Not hating, just being honest. Read it, you'll see what I mean. Good, but man...
Disappointing on so many levels. The spelling and formatting errors were almost a welcome distraction from this hot mess of a story.
Great sci-fi thriller that combine my love for tech, gadgets, adventure, and the ocean! Fun character interaction as well as the underdog good guys doing their best to do the right thing against the odds. Never underestimate the power of smart nerdy geeks! :) Just loved this read! WELL DONE!
