(deep sigh) What didn't I like about the book? There is nothing better than reading a well written book. I loved every part of it. There are no negative parts. I loved Lady Elizabeth/Bess Byrd's character. She is like a phoenix, rising from the ashes to begin anew. Everyone in society turned their backs on her. Her father, Lord Thomas Byrd, eighth Baron Conway, and her ex-fiance Conner Garvey duplicitous and illegal actions, she felt shamed and disgraced. So, she withdrew from society. With the help of her dear friend, Irene Follett, she was able to pick up the pieces of her life and find a new purpose. Bess is brave to start over and brave to endure the degrading, disparaging remarks people would say behind her back and to her face. She is resilient and remarkable. Intelligent and kind. She gives back to the community her time and love by way of a children's food kitchen and homeless shelter. She meets Lord Nathaniel Linfield, the 7th Earl of Dartmouth, in an unusual way. They begin to work together and the attraction between them grows. Nathaniel does not know the whole sordid details of Bess's background, but wants to get to know her. Nathaniel grew up at the knee of his wonderful father. His father was a great orator and had a profound influence in Parliament. But Nathaniel did not have the hutzpah for public speaking. But he is his father's son and he is intelligent and considerate. He had the heart of a politician, he just needed guidance and help putting himself and his thoughts together. Then he met Bess and everything changed their lives. A wonderful book full of emotion, drama, forgiveness and humility. I loved it and I highly recommend it.
Its fortunate that the author did not state the the time period or the lack of research would have been even worse. for the H and h to immediately call each other by first names ,without even invited to do so,is rude even today. that shes working as a secretary ,but horse drawn carriages abound ,make me believe perhaps the early 1900s. If the hero is a lord then he would not run for election. He would have a place in the House of Lords automatically unless he was a younger son. The errors were endless and distracted me from any enjoyment of the story. unfortunately I already purchased more of her books before i read this one. I hope the others are not as inaccurate.
A enjoyable story about a woman with a talent for speech writing and a Lord who wants to run for Parliament. Lady Elizabeth Byrd is hiding from society after her fiancé is hung for conning people out of their money. To make matters worse her father a Baron also was part of the scheme. He ran away to parts unknown. Leaving poor Elizabeth to face the scorn of society. Lord Linfield is handsome and rich a perfect catch in society eyes but he prefers being alone with his dog. His mother is pressuring to marry and he decides to follow in his father’s footsteps and run for office. The problem is he is uncomfortable speaking in public. His first public speech was horrible and in the Rising Sun newspaper he is scorned by political writer LB. He realizes he will never be the great politician his father was without help. He contacts the mysterious LB and asks him to dinner at house. To his shock LB Lady Elizabeth and her editor of the paper Irene show up. He is surprise to see the political writer is a woman and a very attractive one at that. He strikes a bargain with Lady Elizabeth to teach him how to be more comfortable and to write his speeches. He will pay her well and keep her secret of political writer LB being a lady. Lady Elizabeth has many issues due to her father and fiancé betrayal and Lord Linfield is trying to live up to his father’s legacy. Eventually both will put aside their difference and work together and heal Lady Elizabeth heart.
I loved everything about this smart romance. Lord Nathaniel suffered the tragic murder of his father a year earlier and has finally decided to grow up and be productive, helpful, and hopefully a member of Parliament like his father had been. He is tall, handsome, and an insider. What he did not know at first was he was completely incompetent at making political speeches--a must have ability if he is to succeed. Then a political analyst for The Rising Sun newspaper pans him, with brilliant verbiage to boot. If only he had that way with words. He decides to hire the make to ghostwrite his speeches, but it shocked when two women arrive. His eyes are opened by this brilliant-minded women who agreed to help him--turns out in more ways than one. His respect and fondness deepen, but will his ever find the words. Will they ignore Society's expectations and follow their inner hearts. So warming, with smart language, ideas, and a handful of other characters who simply delighted the cockles of my heart as I got to know and love them all. Felt like I had more HEAs than expected by the end. What is not to love about this story--Ms. Abigail Agar has done it again and knocked it out of the park! Some riches to rags to discovering true wealth of character for adorable, lovable Lady Elizabeth "Bess" Byrd. I was impressed with this endearing story.
Lady Elizabeth Byrd's is working at a newspaper called The Rising Sun as a secretary the publisher Irene Follett. She begins to ghostwrite political analysis and one of the gentlemen she writes about his Lord Nathaniel Linfield, his father was a Member of Parliament and had been one of their brilliant members. He had been killed several years before this time. Elizabeth used LB as her pseudonym in writing the political assays and she had really bad things to say about Nathaniel and his speechmaking. Nathaniel knew his speechmaking horrible but he didn't know what to do about it, he couldn't find out who LB was so he sent a letter The Rising Sun asking LB to have dinner with him. So Elizabeth's and Irene showed up at his house for dinner. Nathaniel thought LB was making a joke on him but he discovered that LB was Lady Elizabeth Byrd and he hired her to help write his speeches. To find out what other actions occur you need to read the book and the extended epilogue. It's a good book...
