Let's be honest, folks: lots of people buy this guidebook. As a result, there are NO hidden gems. You will arrive at the "hidden gems" listed in this book in Kauai and find a dozen tourists standing there just like you, holding this same book in their hands.That said, how does it perform as a guidebook for Kauai? Fantastic. It was clearly written by someone who is intimately familiar with the island (not just a travel author on assignment for a week). When I went to Kauai for vacation in January, 2010, I took this guidebook with me. It gave me much greater confidence in exploring the island, and I learned to trust its recommendations and suggestions. When I go back to Kauai in January, 2012, I will definitely bring the newest version of this guidebook with me.In short, if you want true "hidden gems," you'll have to find a real local who knows where they are. But if you just want a great guidebook and don't know your way around Kauai, this one works and works very well.
We just returned from Kauai and this book was right on the money with it's recommendations and warnings. This is a perfect example of how a guidebook should be written. It's honest, unbiased, and written with a causal but comprehensive style. I would recommend however that you either take along a GPS or rent one with your rental car. We took ours along and I'm glad we did. I can't imagine how we would have found some of the best spots on the island without it. There aren't many roads, but the roads that are there are not particularly well marked, plus they're difficult to pronounce for a first time visitor. For the new comer to Kauai the guidebook is up to date and told us just about everything we needed to know. We were told that some of the locals would like to find the author and bury him in the sand for some of his reviews, but judging by our experience it may be better for those who didn't impress to just try a little harder. From shave ice to resturants the food reviews were spot on. For the best tours, attractions, and places not to miss the advice was perfect. Get this book, a good GPS, and you'll love this heaven-on-earth place known as Kauai. Mahalo!
Kauai Revealed is an indispensable companion to any Kauai trip. I've been using it since my first trip in 2001 (3rd Edition) and every year since (subsequently using editions 4 through 6). Andrew Doughty clearly is someone committed to the highest quality; the maps, the detailed information, and the gorgeous photographs are all top-notch. Add to that his candid descriptions and amusing, light-hearted writing style and you get a book that's fun to read even when you're not on-island. (BTW, whatever happened to co-author Harriet?)My only complaint is that the 6th edition is almost identical to the 5th. I like the design improvements but the additional and updated information doesn't really justify a new edition (or a new purchase).
Yes he is corny and self aggrandizing at times, but his are hands down the best guidebooks I have ever purchased - more like having an amusing friend share his intimate insight about the place he loves and knows like few other people. Several years ago when in Maui, we puchased his book "Maui Revealed" and it made all the difference in the world in our enjoyment of that island - the sights, the hikes, the food. When we decided to come to Kauai this year, the first thing I did was purchase "The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook" (available at Amazon). It has been our constant companion on our trip (we are currently in the middle of our 1 week in paradise). Kauai is an amazing place (we are staying on the gorgeous and lush north shore) and I would encourage anyone who loves nature and friendly people to come here - but be sure and get this book first! His knowlege is indispensible on the beaches and hikes - their characteristics and how to get to them. Likewise, his no-holds-barred reviews of restaurants, shopping, and activity concessionaires, have really helped us have some terrific experiences here (and we are only half done!)
I've purchased the Kauai and Maui books and find them to be quite insightful reads. They came highly recommended from several people I know that have also owned them and visit Hawaii often. They are really good at highlight and detailing destinations and hidden secrets of the islands. Especially good for hikers and nature explorers. Problem is, everyone reads these books so the secrets aren't very secret anymore. Only downside to these books is they don't go into great detail on lodging accommodations for the budget minded traveler. They touch on it, but there's so many more neat places you can stay on the islands without breaking the bank, a simple web search will turn up plenty of results, though some of the reviews are hard to trust. With that, the books get 4 stars, otherwise if there was more info on places to stay it'd get 5 stars. Accommodations could be a book on it's very own most likely!
This is a really useful book -- highly recommended. It's packed with aerial photos, which give an outstanding perspective on beaches and help provide a visual idea of whether a spot is worth exploring. Other photos give a nice preview of Kauai. There are good maps, detailed driving instructions, and candid reviews based on local knowledge. The writing is lively, with occasional humor. Just returned from Kauai and dreaming of the next trip. The Ultimate guide helped us navigate our way around the island and find the best beaches. Tunnels Beach is not to be missed for snorkeling and sheer beauty. The restaurant guide was always spot on- the best being Scotty's BBQ, the author's own restaurant. The precise directions down to the tenth of a mile helped tremendously, as many beaches and other sights are not marked with signage. The guide was our Kauai Bible and was instrumental in creating a fabulous vacation!
