This book is written by experts. They give review after review of many schools and colleges. More importantly, it indicates how these colleges and universities achieved the best best practices. It is a 360 degree review that includes students', educators', and employers' needs and wants for successful career building.

The Princeton Review publishes a number of college search/shopping books every year, including the basic "The Complete Book of Colleges", and the more advanced "Best Colleges"--the 2017 edition being "The Best 381 Colleges". In my opinion, the latter remains the best/most valuable/most essential college search/shopping book out there, period. Now comes this book (slightly updated from its original 2015 publication), which challenges traditional thinking, and then some."Colleges That Create Futures: 50 Schools That Launch Careers By Going Beyond the Classroom" (2017 publication; 352 pages) dwindles down the 381 "best" colleges to a mere 50 colleges that the book claims provide the best 'experiential' learning (defined in the book as "applying what you already know to unfamiliar and variable situations"). How did the editors come to these 50 particular "extraordinary colleges" (the book's specific words)? According to the book, "we looked at data from our own surveys of students and administrators, and we personally reached out to dozens of schools. We also sought feedback from our Princeton Review editors and test-prep experts who are on college campuses and have their ears to the ground about exemplary programs at various institutions." In other words: the list is based on a subjective evaluation, not objective 'hard data'.Let me state upfront that I am most familiar with colleges in Ohio (where I live and my oldest went) and DC (where I went to school myself as well as my youngest). When I see which Ohio and DC schools made the list of 50, I am frankly astonished. DC gets 1 school (George Washington--full disclaimer: I am a GW law school grad). This book thus challenges the traditional pecking order of DC colleges (Georgetown at the top, then GW, then American, then Catholic). I'm sure Georgetown cannot be pleased about this. As for Ohio, a mere 2 schools made the list: Oberlin, and University of Dayton. With all due respect to UD, I am quite certain that 'people in general' view schools like Miami, Ohio State and Case Western as the more challenging, and hence the more valuable. Again, this book now challenges the traditional thinking big time. When you read the profiles (each school gets about 6-7 pages), it brings an overview of what the school offers in experiential learning (for example, UD offers, and this book writes up a summary of, the Center for Social Concern, the Inventive English Program, the China Institute, Engineers in Service, Flyer Enterprises, and the Davis Center for Portfolio Management). Does this make UD a "top 50" school? Honestly, I have no idea. One further observation: Pennsylvania (8 listed colleges) and New York (9) collectively manage to land a whopping one-third of all colleges on this list. Wow.Taken at face value, the implications of "Colleges That Create Futures" are enormous, in fact revolutionary, in the college search/shopping field. If nothing else, the book certainly will stimulate further debate about the value of a particular college, and how colleges are or should be ranked (for good measure, a number of Ivy Leagues, including Harvard, Brown and Vanderbilt, did not make the list of 50).
