Review

Girls in Real-Life Situations (G.I.R.L.S.) is an excellent resource for school districts and community groups that want to enhance the social and emotional development of middle school and high school girls. It provides practical, sensible, and perhaps most importantly replicable tools for practitioners to help girls navigate through the turbulent teen years. --Jill Cook, Assistant Director, American School Counselor AssociationAs a counselor educator, it is great to see a resource that hits on salient developmental themes, uses sound group principles (e.g., screening, icebreakers, follow up), and fosters discussion to make these often hidden topics explicit. It is also a compelling resource for me, as I try to help two daughters thrive. --Patrick Akos, Ph.D., School of Education, University of North Carolina, Chapel HillG.I.R.L.S. is an insightful exploration of the feelings and experiences that all young women have. Each of the lessons addresses a specific area of life that is a reality for girls today. Taylor and Trice-Black know how to connect with girls to help them reach for their dreams and overcome adversity. A must-have for anyone working with young women today! --Tamara Davis, Ph.D., School Counseling Coordinator, Marymount University

I couldn't decide whether to rate this book as 3 or 4 stars because it was solely on the content and my experience using this curriculum. I really like the content and activities that this book has, but I would not recommend it to start with when you begin to build trust with a group inside the schools. When initially going through the book, the content and activities of this book would most definitely reveal a lot about individuals during your social skills group sessions, which would be beneficial for the therapist or counselor, but I'm not so sure between classmates. However, I found myself not using this book at all after the first couple of lessons. The reason is that when I went through the first lesson with the girls, most of them did not want to reveal anything about themselves, which was understandable especially when they have not built trust with each other and with me. When I finished the end of the next lesson with them, I noticed that they seemed bored and resistant to the content. I found that I was able to get a lot more progress with building games and fun activities that went well with the topic (not using the book). My experience did not go well using this book, but may work well with others. However, I could see progress using this curriculum for school counselors who already built rapport with their students.

A lot of good activities that are applicable to middle school girls! The activities are separated into sections, but most of them can stand on there own, in case you need to pick and choose based on the needs of your group. Categories include who am I?, body image, choices, communication, emotions, friendships, relationships (as in dating), self-esteem, stress, reaching out, and tough times. I really liked the section on stress! The friendship section seems to be more focused on how to be a good friend than how to make friends. Teaching out is about asking for help or support. The book also includes a certificate for the girls, a pre and post test, a survey for the end, and a CD.

I am a therapist and group coordinator for a private practice. When I started our office's group therapy program last year I knew I wanted to have a group that helped girls understand themself better and be more prepared for developing a richer character and better social skills. GOLD MINE!! This is IT! It has been such a huge success that we continue to offer it ever session. Schools, parents, other mental health therapist and professionals are calling my office to refer their clients to our group. Hands down a must have for anyone planning on leading a girls group.

I bought this book to utilize during small groups I ran during my internship. It's in a very flexible format and addresses issues that are clearly pertinent to girls In this age group. The activities and discussion kept the girls engaged and they even said they had fun ; but I wuodn't call this book light and fluffy either- it's a great balance of information and engaging activities to support their learning and growing.A few activities sometimes made me wonder ithough, like a "tea party" to practice manners and polite conversation. While I think my middle school groups would have liked the throw-back to and old game, I'm not sure how high school girls would feel about it.

I used this curriculum with middle school girls in a small counseling group and they seemed to really relate. There were enough options to tailor it to the group needs.

Perfect for small groups. Any and everything you'll need is in here from parent permission forms to purpose of the group. Ice breakers and great activities to do with student!!

As a school counseling intern student this has been an incredibly useful resource for small group counseling. I utilized a lot of the resources from this book to discuss topics of friendship with students and found the worksheets and activities to be relevant and engaging for students.

I could not love this book more. I run an 8th grade girls group and this book is spot on for issues girls face. The activities are meaningful and easy to present. I don't have a lot of time to plan activities for group and this book takes the work out of it for me. I simply pick a topic I want to discuss, and the book provides discussion questions and activities. LOVE THIS!!!! I wish there was a version for boys on specific issues they face.
